I first came across Krobo beads when traveling in Ghana, West Africa. I fell in love with the vibrant colors and ethnic feel of these beautiful handmade beads!
Krobo beads are made of recycled glass powder which is poured into molds to form drum shaped beads. After burning in a wooden fire kiln, the beads are then hand painted with a wooden stick and placed in the kiln again to set the color. The beads reproduce old Venetian fancy trade beads that European brought to Africa to trade for local goods.
When I came back home, I got inspired to combine Ghanian Krobo beads with European style jewelry to produce interesting designs like this one. The earrings come with two art nouveau brass metal beads, wooden rondelle beads and antique brass leverback hooks.
